Last week we changed the gear in the rear differential on a 1985 Chevy C-10 from 3.4 to 3.7 gears to lower the gear ratio and created positive traction by installing a positive traction carrier assembly.
⚙️ Ever wonder what changing your vehicle’s gear ratio actually does?
🚲 Think of it like riding a bicycle. A lower gear makes it easier to get moving, climb hills, and pull heavy loads, but you have to pedal a little faster. Your vehicle is the same way.
By changing from 3.4 to 3.7 gears, the engine gains more power and provides better performance. That means:
✅ Better acceleration from a stop
✅ Improved towing performance
✅ Less strain when pulling trailers/hauling heavy loads
✅ Better performance if you’ve upgraded to larger tires
The trade off? At highway speeds, there can be a decrease in fuel economy due to the engine running at a slightly higher RPM.
