The driver shortage has been around long enough that calling it a hiring problem completely misses the point. It's painful.

School Transportation News recently reported that operators rank driver shortages and underused buses among their biggest challenges. And yes, those two problems are connected.

If you're on the struggle bus to find CDL qualified drivers, a smaller bus might make more sense on some of your routes. We know it's a reminder, but those shuttles designed for fewer than 16 passengers including the driver generally fall outside the federal CDL passenger threshold.

And that opens you up to a whole world of part-timers, retirees and parents. Really, anyone with a regular license could potentially be a great fit for the route.

Sometimes the better bus isn't the one with more seats. It's the one you have someone to drive. Are you changing the way you size buses because drivers are harder to find?

Somewhere today, a fleet operator shut down and their buses didn't disappear.

And somewhere a 2019 Type C with plenty of life left is heading to auction. When the hammer drops, the winning bid may look like the deal of the year. But is it? What did you really buy?

Auctions are good for seeing what buses are bringing right now. But you take your chances on the maintenance history, an inspection, or a conversation with the owner. Bankruptcy inventory is generally sold as-is, cash or wire, and bring a trailer. Whatever else it needs, you'll find out after it's yours.

Our sales team watches auctions every week, and sometimes there are good buses and good buys.

Are you buying at an auction this month? Tell us what you're chasing and we'll tell you what we'd check before bidding.

"We need 40 people transported on and off site every week by the end of the month. Make it happen!" Oh great. Every operator knows this type of call.

Except you don't have six months to wait for a new build, and gambling on a bus with no history relies on a lot of Hopium.

Sometimes the job is simpler than that. Find the right bus. Give us a call. Know what you're buying. We'll deliver it. And it'll get there before the crew needs it.

Hey fleet buyers, have you ever lost a bus you wanted to a faster buyer? What did that experience teach you?

For our buyers, domestic and international, we always suggest a few things to have ready
1. Know your route
2. Know your hard number
3. Have your financing lined up

Do those things, and, when the right unit shows up, you can move before someone else bags it.

Since American diesel buses have a long life, they’re wanted on every continent. They’re built rugged, the parts are familiar. And a school bus from New Jersey will happily live a second life hauling workers in Santiago or students in Lagos. Overseas buyers see a clean, low-mileage bus with real records and they wire the money instead of "think it over." For our locals, the export market competes for the same clean inventory you’re looking at.

So, if experience has taught you anything, don’t wait too long once you find what you need.

You can't un-ship a bus.

A used American bus overseas is one of the best deals in transportation, and the one purchase you can't walk back once it's on the water. We always suggest four things to confirm before you wire a dime. Swipe.

Overseas buyers, what's the first thing you check before a bus ships?

Let's do some Campus Shuttle Math.

The sticker price is the smallest number in a shuttle's five-year cost.

What you actually pay for over five years is the seats you run empty. On our own lot, the spread is plain. A right-sized cutaway for a small daily loop runs around $20,000. Buy a mid-size shuttle and it'll run $65,000 and up. That's about $45,000 spent on seats that ride empty, before the extra fuel and insurance you carry on them for five years. Right-size your purchase for your needs and that money stays in the budget.

And speaking of numbers, here's one that we remind our customers about. Under the IRS commuter rule, transportation you provide employees in a qualifying vehicle can be a pre-tax benefit worth up to $340 a month per employee in 2026. Run it right and the bus pays for part of itself.

So the honest five-year cost is a right-sized purchase, plus fuel and insurance on the seats you actually use, minus a tax benefit that's sitting on the table.

Buy the bus your route needs, then go ask your accountant about Section 132(f).

Most buyers come to us set on a specific bus. Half the time, a short conversation about the actual route points them to a smaller one that costs less to buy and less to run. Tell us your route and your everyday headcount, and we'll help you choose the shuttle that pays off instead of the one that drains the budget.

Universities and employers, is anyone on your team actually claiming the commuter benefit?

New vs Used, University Edition.

For a first campus or university fleet, used almost always wins. Here's the honest why.

Just like your new car, a new shuttle takes its steepest depreciation hit in the first couple of years, before it has moved a single passenger. A well-kept used unit already took that hit for you. Same working bus, but at a fraction of the price.

The catch is the records. Used only wins if the maintenance file backs it up. You need info on things like a documented history, a known chassis, current tires and brakes, a working lift. And remember, the cheapest unit in a class is usually cheap for a reason, and the reason is in the file. Or rather, there's probably NOT a file.

One of many examples on our lot right now fits the profile: a 2019 Freightliner 26-passenger shuttle, one owner, every service record, 41,000 miles. New money's worth of bus, at a used price, with the paperwork to prove it.

Buy the records, not just the bus.

Fleet folks, what's the one document you won't buy a used bus without?

Listing:

2019 Freightliner M2 Champion 26-Passenger Shuttle with lavatory, Cummins Diesel, Allison automatic transmission, dedicated rear luggage storage,110V and USB chargers at each seat, REI DVD hydraulic brakes and more. One owner, every service record and only 41,000 miles.

We're on the 2026 Inc. 5000.

The list ranks the fastest-growing private companies in America by three-year revenue growth, and this year we came in at No. 1,243, up 281 percent.

We are proud of the number. But we're prouder of why it happened. Buying a bus used to mean a classified listing, a phone tag marathon, and a lot of unanswered questions. We built a marketplace that answers the questions, with real inventory, real buying help, financing, the paperwork handled, and delivery to the door.

Thank you to every district, church, charter operator, and fleet manager who trusted us with a purchase this big. You are the reason the number moved.

We are not done.

When you're looking at shuttle buses, it's easy to get swamped by numbers. Especially the sticker price. But the real number to focus on is the number of seats in the shuttle.

We recently wrote a Mini Bus vs Shuttle Bus guide about how sixteen seats can be the line between easy to pay for and expensive. At 16 passengers or more, counting the driver, your driver needs a commercial license with a passenger endorsement, and your insurance requirement climbs. Stay at 15 or under and a standard license covers it, with a much lower floor.

So before you fall for a bigger bus, do this:

1. Size to your everyday run, not your once-a-semester peak. You fuel, insure, and park the empty seats every other day of the week.
2. If your daily load fits under 16, a 12- to 14-passenger cutaway keeps you off the CDL and the higher insurance tier.
3. If you truly need 25 to 35 seats, budget the CDL driver and the insurance now, not after the bus is in the lot. We'll be happy to help you decide!

For our campus and shuttle folks, what are your everyday load numbers per trip, under 16 or over?

If you run diesel coaches, you know the DEF derate headache. A sensor faults and the coach limps to the shoulder with a full load aboard.

Metro Magazine reported this month that the EPA has proposed removing those emissions-related engine derates on new heavy-duty diesels. Instead of dropping into limp mode when a DEF system faults, the bus would keep running and alert the driver so the fix happens safely. The American Bus Association backed it, and the EPA is taking comment on extending similar relief to coaches already in service.

Here is why it lands for used buyers. On any modern diesel coach, the emissions system is one of the first things to check, and derate history tells you how a unit was run and maintained. A more forgiving rule makes the whole diesel fleet, new and used, more dependable on the road. Reliability is most of what you are actually buying.

Worth a read for anyone running or shopping a diesel coach. Have DEF derates bitten you out on a route? Curious how often it happens.
