The driver shortage has been around long enough that calling it a hiring problem completely misses the point. It's painful.
School Transportation News recently reported that operators rank driver shortages and underused buses among their biggest challenges. And yes, those two problems are connected.
If you're on the struggle bus to find CDL qualified drivers, a smaller bus might make more sense on some of your routes. We know it's a reminder, but those shuttles designed for fewer than 16 passengers including the driver generally fall outside the federal CDL passenger threshold.
And that opens you up to a whole world of part-timers, retirees and parents. Really, anyone with a regular license could potentially be a great fit for the route.
Sometimes the better bus isn't the one with more seats. It's the one you have someone to drive. Are you changing the way you size buses because drivers are harder to find?
