🔑 **The Key You Don’t Know Exists May Be a Bigger Security Problem Than the Lock on Your Door**
When was the last time you thought about how many keys to your business actually exist?
Not how many keys you handed out.
**How many keys actually exist.**
There can be a big difference.
An employee gets a key and makes a spare. A manager makes an extra copy for convenience. A contractor has a key temporarily. An employee leaves the company, returns their original key, but made another copy two years ago.
The business owner may never know.
And that's the problem.
Someone with a working key doesn't need to pick your lock, break a window, or force a door.
**They simply unlock it.**
# # # Restricted Keys Give Businesses More Control
A **restricted key system** is designed to give businesses much greater control over key duplication.
Instead of having standard keys that may be copied without management knowing, restricted keys use controlled duplication procedures. Depending on the system, that can include restricted key blanks, authorization requirements, proprietary keyways, patented technology, and documented key issuance.
For a business, that means better answers to some very important questions:
🔹 Who has keys to our building?
🔹 Who is authorized to request another key?
🔹 How many keys have we issued?
🔹 Which doors does each key open?
🔹 What happens when an employee leaves?
🔹 What happens when a key is lost?
If you can't confidently answer those questions, you may have a **key-control problem**.
# # # Returning a Key Doesn't Always Mean You've Regained Control
This is especially important when employees leave.
If an employee returns a standard key, you have the key you originally gave them.
But do you have **every copy**?
With an unrestricted key, you may have no way of knowing.
Restricted key control helps businesses manage keys more like other security credentials. Keys can be issued under established authorization procedures and tracked as part of the organization's overall security system.
# # # Restricted Keys + Master Key Systems
Restricted keys can also be combined with a **commercial master key system**.
A master key system controls **which doors a key can open**.
Restricted key control helps control **who can obtain another copy of that key**.
That combination can be especially valuable for businesses, schools, churches, medical facilities, municipalities, warehouses, industrial sites, and organizations with multiple buildings or departments.
An employee might only have access to the front entrance and their office.
A department manager might have access to the entire department.
Facilities personnel might have broader building access.
The goal is simple:
**Give people access to the areas they need without giving everyone access to everything.**
# # # What About Electronic Access Control?
Electronic access control is an excellent solution for many commercial doors. Credentials can be deactivated, schedules can be established, permissions can be changed, and some systems provide detailed audit trails.
But that doesn't mean every door in a 50-, 100-, or 200-door facility needs electronics.
Many businesses can benefit from a combination of the two.
Use electronic access control on important entrances and high-security areas, then use restricted mechanical keys on offices, storage areas, utility rooms, mechanical rooms, and other interior doors.
That can provide strong commercial key control without the cost of electronically controlling every opening.
# # # Look Beyond the Lock
Good commercial security isn't just about buying a better lock.
It's about controlling **access**.
So take a moment and think about the keys to your business.
How many have been handed out over the last five or ten years?
How many employees have come and gone?
How many contractors have had keys?
How many copies might have been made?
And most importantly:
**Do you actually know how many working keys exist today?**
If the answer is no, it may be time to look at restricted key control.
