Back in 1989, a V8 pickup didn't need to be complicated to be useful. Two very different choices were the Dodge Ram 150 and GMC Sierra 1500.

The 1989 Dodge Ram 150 could be equipped with a 5.2-liter V8 producing around 170 horsepower. It had enough power for everyday hauling and towing without making things complicated, and its squared-off styling gave it a tough look that still stands out today.

The 1989 GMC Sierra 1500 offered a larger 5.7-liter V8 producing around 210 horsepower, giving it a clear advantage in power. It was a straightforward full-size pickup with a traditional body-on-frame layout and plenty of room to work.

The Ram had the smaller V8.

The Sierra had the bigger engine and more power.

But neither was trying to be a luxury vehicle.

They were built around a simple idea: give people a solid truck, a V8, a usable bed, and let them get to work.

That's probably what I miss most about trucks from this era.
