Cat Island hosted one of the Army’s strangest experiments during World War II.

Swiss dog trainer William Prestre believed dogs could distinguish people by a scent connected to their cultural heritage. The Army tested his theory by attempting to train dogs to track and attack Japanese soldiers, using Japanese American troops as live training targets. The dogs repeatedly refused to cooperate—during one drill, they took the bait meat and licked the soldiers’ faces. After two unsuccessful demonstrations, the program was abandoned and the Cat Island training center closed on July 15, 1944.
