.xpressdrivers Before the advent of long-haul trucking, freight was moved primarily by rail. Connecting rail cars was a dangerous process that injured or killed many rail workers.
Luckily, Andrew Jackson Beard had a plan to increase the safety among workers. Beard invented an improved Jenny Coupler, a device used to automatically connect rail cars by bumping them together, removing the need for workers to connect cars.
Not long after, President Benjamin Harrison required all trains to feature automatic couplers. Beard’s invention has saved countless lives over the years, and variations of the device are still used today.
