GL-4 or GL-5? Which one does your gearbox actually need?

Many people think GL-5 is simply "better". It isn't. It's designed for a different job.

- GL-5 has high extreme pressure (EP) additives to protect heavily loaded differentials and axles.
- GL-4 has moderate EP levels, made for manual gearboxes where synchronisers need the right friction to shift smoothly.

The wrong oil can mean crunchy gear changes, worn synchros or damaged diff gears.

And 75W-90 is just the viscosity grade. It comes in both GL-4 and GL-5, so matching the viscosity isn't enough.

Always follow your equipment manufacturer's specification.

Can You Mix Different Hydraulic Oils?

The short answer: sometimes — but don’t assume they’re compatible.

Even if two oils are both ISO VG 46, they may use different base oils and additive chemistries. Mixing incompatible hydraulic oils can lead to reduced performance, deposits, seal issues and contamination.

Before mixing or changing hydraulic oil, check:

OEM specifications
Base oil type
Additive chemistry
Oil compatibility
Existing oil condition

Changing products? You may need to drain and flush the system before introducing the new oil.
