McCarley’s Shop Tip: Understanding the First Notice of Loss (FNOL)

After an accident, most people call their insurance company right away. Don’t rush to make that call just yet! That first call is what’s known as the First Notice of Loss (FNOL) — and it’s where many repair decisions start.

What most drivers don’t realize is that insurance companies may try to direct you to one of their “preferred” or Direct Repair Program (DRP) shops. These shops often have contracts that can favor the insurer’s bottom line over your vehicle’s best repair.

💡 Here’s what to know: You always have the legal right to choose where your vehicle is repaired. Your insurance coverage still applies, no matter which shop you choose.
