Yesterday, Stephen Rodhouse, President, and Nicole Rodhouse, CEO of Automotive Armor Manufacturing, personally delivered ballistic shields to a Florida Sheriff’s Office — equipment built to help protect the men and women who protect our communities.

For us, this is more than a delivery. It represents what happens when American manufacturing, quality craftsmanship, and a commitment to officer safety come together.

When evaluating ballistic protection, one of the most important factors is understanding NIJ (National Institute of Justice) protection levels. Not all armor is designed to stop the same threats, and selecting the right solution starts with knowing the mission.

Here’s a simplified breakdown:

🛡️ Level IIIA (Soft/Hard Armor)
• Protects against most common handgun threats.
• Commonly used in concealable vests, backpacks, safe rooms, ballistic shields and vehicle armor.
• Designed for mobility.

🛡️ Level III (Hard Armor)
• Designed to stop standard rifle rounds, including 7.62×51mm NATO ball ammunition.
• Frequently used in tactical operations, ballistic shields, safe rooms, vehicle armor systems and critical infrastructure protection.

🛡️ Level IV (Hard Armor)
• Provides protection against armor-piercing rifle threats under NIJ testing standards.
• Chosen for environments where the highest level of rifle protection is required.
• Usually contains a ballistic ceramic strike plate consisting of aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, or boron carbide.

Common Misconception:
A higher NIJ rating doesn’t automatically mean it’s the best choice. The ideal armor balances the expected threat, weight, mobility, comfort, and operational requirements. The right solution depends on the mission—not simply the highest rating available.
