I usually don't share content posted by other folks here, but I will make an exception for this incredible video from 1953. This shows a working Texaco station in nearby Mattoon, IL. It also appears to be undergoing an expansion during this time period as well.

Our Shell station also received an expansion (in 1947) and I would imagine the construction site looked a lot like this. Very cool video.

We have a special guest for the open house tomorrow (7:30 am - 12 pm). JR Dunlap's 1955 Ford Thunderbird. The T-bird and the Shell station are such a good match. The T bird is also nice companion for the Model A. See you tomorrow.

It's that time of year again, Labor Day weekend here in Palestine, IL! Every Labor Day, our town is host to Pro-Rodeo, Labor Day Parade, street fair, and, of course, the chuckwagon breakfast on Saturday morning.

As is tradition, the Shell station will be having an open house this Saturday morning if you would like to stop in and see the progress of the building restoration. We will be open from 7:30 am - 12 pm.

We have made substantial progress over the past year on this project. Since last Labor Day, we now have a running 96 year old Ford Model A, restored gas pumps outside, amd the sign pole is up. Also, I painted, wired, and stood up the pair of 100 year old cast iron street lights that illuminate this place at night. I collaborated with Steve Meadows on a handful of carved signs hanging in the shop over the past year. So there is lots more to see this Labor Day.

We will also have old timey ice cold Coca-Cola in glass bottles and bottled water for free will donation. So stop by, grab a drink, and step back in time.

JR Dunlap is the nicest guy I know. He let Erin and I take his 1955 Thunderbird for a drive during the cruise-in last weekend. Thanks for creating such a great memory for us. Not many people would hand me the keys to their classic car and let me take it for a spin. Thanks buddy, I appreciate it.

Now that 17th Annual American Graffiti Cruise - 2026 is in the books, I would like to extend my sincere thanks for a lot of great people who helped make this event a success:

Chris Winters – The beating heart of this event. He’s done this event for 17 years. So glad he brought his show to Palestine.

Todd Waiz - Spun those great oldies all night. It wouldn’t be the same show without the music! It sounded great.

David Woods – There is nothing this guy wouldn’t do for this event. Our biggest supporter and really helped coordinate a lot of details for the event. Even set up some picnic tables with me.

Jesse Hock – Fantastic job directing traffic and getting cars parked throughout the event. Really appreciate the help.

Village of Palestine - DPW – Set up street barricades, arranged for street sweeping before event. Picked up tree limbs that I trimmed at the station. I appreciate everything you do for our town.

Village of Palestine Board – Thanks for approving this crazy idea back in March!

Palestine Unit 3 Schools – Thanks for letting our car folks park trailers at the high school during the event.

Palestine Development Association – Loaned us the picnic tables and trash cans normally used for the wine fest. Donated the 2 porta-potties for the event. Thanks for supporting this event!

Steve Mitchell – Gave me a helping hand with moving and setting up picnic tables/trash cans before event.

Susan Goodwine – Shared with me her expertise in running the wine fest. Helped me avoid common pitfalls with putting on a public event with food. Thanks for all the help!

Jim Goodwine & Family – My neighbors to the west of the station, thanks for letting us use your property during the event.

Laura Moore White – Event promotion and PR. Got our event on the Palestine and Robinson digital signs!

Gary and Drew Strate – Gas pump restoration delivered just in time. Your great work was on full display. It wouldn’t have been the same show without those gas pumps back on the pump island again.

Leo Stoltz & Rita Carmouche – Thanks for jumping in and mowing lawns in our neighborhood around the station. The neighborhood really looked great for the event.

Stan Halterman – Station Lawncare. Thanks for always taking care of the station yardwork for me. The time saved allowed me to get several projects done before the event.

Food Truck Vendors – The Copper Cactus & Sip It, thanks for taking a chance and serving a new event. I hope to have you back next year.
