THE DRUG MARKET IS TAKING OVER DOWNTOWN

For months now, an open-air drug market has been operating in a small park in Downtown West. The park, located at 13th Street and Pine, sits between the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum and the Central Library, and just steps away from Confluence Preparatory Academy.

City workers sweep away debris every morning, but by the afternoon the park fills back up. On a recent afternoon, there were clear signs of drug activity people stooped over themselves, some passed out on the grass, while others leaned into parked cars along Pine and Olive before returning to the park.

Police sources have described some of the drugs being sold as fentanyl analogs, which can be difficult to detect in tests. Social workers say the mix may include xylazine, a horse tranquilizer, often referred to as a “zombie drug.” Despite efforts by the city to bring in social workers, the drug sales continue openly, creating a cycle that repeats daily.
