We want our residents and visitors to be aware that Fire Lanes are not parking spaces. You will see fire lanes marked clearly in front of businesses and in shopping plazas outside their doors and walkways. They are marked with a yellow curb, yellow painted lines and in large yellow print. You may only need to dash in to drop off your kids at daycare or play centers, grab your pick-up order, or drop off/pick up a package, but what if someone were having a medical emergency where emergency vehicles need to respond? If a fire truck, ambulance or police car needs to have access to where you are parked, this will cost valuable minutes in saving a life or property.
Parking in a fire lane may also cause other drivers to park there if they see a car already parked there, which will hinder emergency vehicles even more. Remember, you can be issued a citation for parking in the fire lane.
Parking in a fire lane also causes a hazard not just to yourself, but to pedestrians and other drivers. If you are in a hurry, you may not see a vehicle leaving the parking lot coming up behind you. Pedestrians may not be able to see around your car and may be in harm’s way for oncoming moving vehicles.
Putting your flashers on to park in a fire lane does not negate the fact you are using the fire lane. Flashers are to be used when your vehicle is having mechanical or electrical problems. If that is the case, try to pull into a parking space and keep your flashers on while you call for a mechanic or tow truck.
Help us stay safe and keep the fire lanes clear.
