E-Bike Rules Are Changing — Here's What's Actually True
If you've seen headlines about Illinois "cracking down on e-bikes," you're not alone — and some of what's circulating isn't accurate.
Here's the fact everyone's getting wrong: some reports said the new rules took effect July 1. They didn't. Illinois Senate Bill 3484 doesn't take effect until January 1, 2027. Nothing about riding your e-bike changes this season.
If you own a standard e-bike, almost nothing changes even then — Class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes stay treated like bicycles, with no license, registration, or insurance required. The new law actually opens things up, replacing Ottawa's current street-by-street rules with one clear statewide standard.
What it does target: the overpowered machines sold online as "e-bikes" that aren't. Anything over 750 watts becomes a motor vehicle in 2027, requiring a license, insurance, and title.
