Friday night, just before the Big Bass Bash got underway, WFO Marine received a message from a fisherman named Sam:
“Hi, my name is Sam. I’m down here fishing the Bash this weekend. I had a problem with my boat trailer…the arm with the roller on it snapped. The weld broke right at the frame. I was wondering if there was anyone who could weld that back on for me before I have to head home Sunday. I’ve got a 3½-hour drive and would really appreciate it.”
The message wasn’t seen until early Saturday morning. Knowing anyone fishing the Bash would already be up, Sharon called Sam back around 6:00 AM.
Sam already had his boat in the water. He said he really only needed a quick tack weld to make the trailer usable for the trip home, where his brother, who is a welder, could fix it properly.
Dan was out fishing the Big Bass Bash himself, so Sharon messaged him to ask which of the guys she should call to come in and handle it.
Dan’s answer was simple:
“Don’t call anybody. Give him my number and tell him to call me after 3:00 when I get off the water. I’ll fix it.”
So Sam got Dan’s personal number, and after a long day of tournament fishing, Dan came back to the shop and got to work.
And because “good enough to get you home” isn’t really how Dan works, he did more than just tack it back together.
He properly repaired the broken upright, found and fixed another problem on the trailer, cleaned everything up, and touched up the repair with black paint so it was finished and matched the trailer.
In fact, if you just looked at this picture, you probably wouldn’t even know anything had been repaired. It just looks like a trailer — and that’s kind of the point.
About an hour later, Sam was ready for the 3½-hour drive home, and his brother won’t have to redo the repair when he gets there.
It wasn’t the biggest job to come through the shop, but that really isn’t the point.
When someone is away from home, their boat is already in the water, they’re trying to fish one of the biggest tournaments of the year, and their trailer breaks underneath them, a little help at the right time can mean a whole lot.
One fisherman helping another fisherman get back on the road. That’s what lake people do.
