Getting your car inspected and prepped before the school year starts helps prevent unexpected breakdowns in the carpool line and keeps kids safe around high-traffic school zones.

​Essential Back-to-School Vehicle Safety Checklist

​1. Stopping & Control
​Brakes: Frequent stop-and-go driving in school zones wears down brake pads. Squeaking, grinding, or a soft/spongy pedal means it's time for an inspection.
​Tires: Check tire pressure (PSI) and tread depth using the Penny Test (insert a penny upside down; if you see the top of Lincoln's head, your tread is under 2/32" and needs replacement). Don't forget to check your spare.

​2. Visibility & Electronics
​Wipers & Fluid: Replace streaky or dry-rotted wiper blades to handle late-summer and early-fall rain. Top off windshield washer fluid.
​Lights: Walk around the car to test headlights, high beams, brake lights, hazards, and turn signals. As daylight gets shorter, working lights are critical for early drop-offs.
​Backup Camera & Sensors: Wipe down backup cameras and blind-spot sensors so they accurately detect pedestrians, backpacks, and bikes in crowded parking lots.

​3. Under the Hood
​Battery Test: Extreme summer heat degrades car battery health far more than winter cold. Have a battery load test done if yours is over 3 years old to avoid a dead battery on a busy school morning.
​Vital Fluids: Check engine oil, coolant/antifreeze, and brake fluid. Top off or change as needed.

​4. Passenger & Interior Safety
​Car Seats & Boosters: Kids grow over the summer. Double-check that harness heights are adjusted correctly and seats are securely anchored (less than 1 inch of side-to-side movement at the belt path).
​Seatbelts: Ensure all rear seatbelts buckle cleanly and retract smoothly without fraying.

BONUS ​Emergency Kit: Stash a small kit in the trunk with a first-aid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, tire pressure gauge, water, and non-perishable snacks.

We here at Tony's Garage love to make an impact in people's lives.
This young guy saw this truck come in the garage in pretty rough shape. The next day as we did a Safety Inspection on his car as he prepared for technical college...to be a Mechanic 🔧. Only for us to find she was too far gone and unsafe to commute to CLE daily. So Project Restoration Silverado began.

We're not fully done w it as of yet, but the Surprise tonight was he got to take her home...Enjoy Kid ...
