April is Distracted Driving Month. According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Association, there are three forms of driver distraction:

Visual — taking your eyes off the road.
Manual — taking your hands off the wheel.
Cognitive — taking your mind off what you are doing.

It's April Fools Day, and while you'll see no tricks from us, we'd like to highlight one of the best April Fools gags ever: on this date in 1970, American Motors introduced the Gremlin. While the model would eventually provide one of the finest frames for hot rodding, a Gremlin off the assembly line wasn't nearly as impressive.

They say there are only two seasons in Western New York: winter and construction. Now that winter is (hopefully) over, we can expect road repair to begin in earnest. Since construction delays can lead to auto collisions, we’ve put together a quick list of tips that will help keep you and your family safe when you see those orange, diamond-shaped signs on the roadside.

1. Slow down and keep driving slowly through the construction zone, even if you don’t see anyone working. There’s a chance you might round a curve or reach the crest of a hill and suddenly see workers and heavy equipment, and having the extra time to react can help prevent an accident. You might also find yourself running across a police officer using radar for speed enforcement (remember that, in New York, speeding fines are doubled in construction zones).

2. Avoid distracted driving. If you’re distracted – by your phone, your car radio, or anything else – there is a chance you might not see directions from flaggers, unpredictable actions from other drivers, or even road hazards that you wouldn’t drive on, like fresh asphalt or cement. The best way to avoid becoming someone’s meme photo is to put down the phone and turn off the radio, while watching the road and your mirrors.

3. Leave extra space between your car and other cars; two or even three car lengths should be the minimum. The most common form of accident in construction zones is a rear-end collision, and you can greatly reduce your risk by leaving extra space.

4. Be patient. Nobody likes waiting, but some folks approach construction zones as if the workers are deliberately trying to inconvenience them. First, remember that the purpose of road work is to keep everyone safe. Secondly, be aware that impatience and frustration can make people drive more dangerously, so be extra careful about the actions of other drivers.
