TODAY IN HISTORY: 'Stay out of that car': Fateful warning ignored by Hollywood star

On September 30, 1955, Hollywood actor James Dean was killed in a car crash at the age of 24 in California.

The star of films East of Eden and Rebel Without a Cause was emerging as the star of his generation when he was alive, but was elevated to cult status after his death.

But rumours emerged after the tragedy the car he was driving in the fatal crash - a Porsche Spyder 550 - was cursed.

Dean, a key motor racer, bought the vehicle just a week before his death and christened it "Little Bastard".

The famous British actor Sir Alec Guinness years later revealed Dean showed him the car when the two met at a Los Angeles restaurant. Guinness told him 'Don't get in that car", and if he did, "he would not be alive by the following week".

His warning came tragically true.
