One question comes up over and over in paint forums:
"What size air compressor do I need?"
The answers are usually all over the map. Some people say you absolutely need an 80-gallon, two-stage compressor. Others say they painted an entire car with a little portable unit.
It reminded me of asking, "What pickup truck should I buy?" Someone inevitably recommends a one-ton diesel dually. Great truck...if you're hauling a fifth-wheel over the Rockies. But maybe you're just making an occasional run to Home Depot.
It got me thinking that maybe we're asking the wrong question.
Instead of asking "What size compressor do I need?", maybe the better question is:
Can my compressor maintain the required pressure at my spray gun long enough for the way I actually paint?
So I put together a simple test that anyone can do with the equipment they already have. It takes just a couple of minutes and gives you real information instead of relying on opinions.
I also wrote up the article with the details and embedded the demonstration video here:

I'd genuinely appreciate your thoughts. Is this a useful way to think about compressor sizing, or am I missing something? I'm always interested in hearing real-world experiences from people actually spraying in their own shops.
