In motorsports, choosing the right steel is not simply about selecting the strongest material. Alloy chemistry, heat treatment, hardened depth, core toughness, fatigue resistance, surface finish, and steel cleanliness all influence how a finished component performs.
🔩 5150 / 5160
Commonly used for billet roller camshaft cores. These chromium alloy steels respond well to induction hardening, providing hard, wear-resistant lobes and journals, while retaining a tougher core. They offer an excellent balance of durability and cost.
⚙️ 8620
A carburizing grade used in gears, roller camshafts, lifter bodies, and steel rocker arms. When properly carburized and heat treated, 8620 develops a hard, wear-resistant case over a tough and ductile core.
🔥 9310
A higher alloy carburizing steel selected for greater core strength, toughness, hardenability, and impact resistance. It can be found in severe-duty gears and extreme racing camshafts, including Top Fuel applications.
🏁 PM M4
A particle metallurgy high speed tool steel offering exceptional wear resistance, strength, and dimensional stability. It is suited for extremely demanding valvetrain loads and aggressive camshaft profiles, including applications at the NASCAR level.
Because a great camshaft requires more than great material. It requires the right alloy, correct heat treatment, precision machining, proper surface finish, and uncompromising quality control. 💪🏼
