There are moments in history that become permanently etched in our memories. Much like our parents could tell us exactly where they were when President John F. Kennedy or Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinatedโor, more recently, many of us can remember exactly where we were when we heard the sad news about Charlie Kirkโฆ these memories matter. They become part of our history and part of the stories we pass on to the next generation.
For so many Americans, September 11, 2001, is one of those days. We will always remember exactly where we were when we heard the news.
Just like today, we opened a little later in September that day, which is why I was still sleeping when Chad came running upstairs with a panicked look on his face and a frantic sound in his voice, waking me up and telling me to come to the TV. My heart immediately sank.
I felt he was about to tell me that someone we loved had died.
Thankfully, we didnโt lose anyone we loved that day. But so many Americans did. Nearly 3,000 innocent people lost their lives because of a terrorist attack fueled by hatred toward our country.
Mothers and fathers. Husbands and wives. Sons and daughters. Friends and coworkers. Children who lost a parent, and some children who had to grow up never knowing a parent.
We will NEVER forget the fearless firefighters and first responders who ran toward the towers when every instinct tells you to run away. So many of them never made it back out.
And we remember the days and months that followed. The men and women who worked tirelessly at Ground Zero searching through the rubble. Through all of that unimaginable sadness, it was amazing to watch Americans come together. People helped one another with no questions asked.
American flags hung from homes, businesses, overpasses and bridges everywhere you looked, bringing a sense of unity across the United States no matter where you were. And that feeling didnโt disappear after a day, a week, or a few monthsโit remained for a very long time afterward.๐บ๐ธ
For a while, we werenโt divided by politics or everything else that can separate us. We were simply Americans, united by our love for our country and for one another. ๐บ๐ธ
Twenty-five years later, perhaps one of the greatest ways we can honor those we lost is to remember that unityโand find our way back to some of it.
May we never forget the innocent lives taken that morning, the heroes who gave their lives trying to save others, the survivors, and the families who have carried their loss for 25 years.
From our family and everyone at Bayside Boat Rentals, we remember them today and always.
