Change tire in 9 steps
Changing a tire can be a simple process if you follow the proper steps. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to change a tire:
1. Find a safe location to change the tire: If you have a flat tire, try to pull over to a safe location, away from traffic, and on level ground. Turn on your hazard lights and engage your parking brake.
2. Gather the necessary tools: You'll need a spare tire, a lug wrench, and a jack. These should be located in your car's trunk. Some cars may have a hubcap that needs to be removed before you can access the lug nuts, so you may also need a flathead screwdriver or a pry bar.
3. Loosen the lug nuts: Using the lug wrench, turn each lug nut counterclockwise to loosen it. Do not remove the lug nuts at this stage.
4. Lift the car with the jack: Refer to your car owner's manual to locate the proper jacking points on your vehicle. Place the jack under the car and begin to pump it until the car is raised enough to remove the tire.
5. Remove the lug nuts and flat tire: Use the lug wrench to fully remove the lug nuts and set them aside. Gently pull the flat tire off the hub and set it aside.
6. Install the spare tire: Line up the spare tire with the hub and gently push it onto the hub. Thread on the lug nuts by hand and tighten them as much as possible.
7. Lower the car and tighten the lug nuts: Lower the car using the jack and remove it. Use the lug wrench to fully tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern, meaning tightening one nut, then the nut directly across from it, and so on.
8. Check the tire pressure: Check the tire pressure of the spare tire and inflate it to the recommended pressure if necessary.
9. Replace the hubcap: If your car has a hubcap, replace it and make sure it's securely in place.
And that's it! You're ready to hit the road again. Just remember to get your flat tire repaired or replaced as soon as possible, and don't drive on your spare tire for too long, as it's not designed for long-term use.
