It’s that time of the year again, and we are receiving a lot of calls for assistance due to overheating engine alarms and bogged down speed due to the eelgrass. Did you know that most of the time the eelgrass can be cleared from your water intakes? When you get an overheat alarm, make sure no boats are behind you, come off the throttle and stop. Then put the boat in reverse and give it some throttle for 5 seconds or so. This will often times clear the grass off of the lower unit of an outboard or I/O boat. If this does not work, give the engine(s) a rev in neutral. If you are still getting the overheat alarm, shut the engine(s) off and trim up the engine(s) or lower unit(s) all the way and see if the eelgrass is covering the water intakes, and pull the grass off. These simple steps could save you a lot of time, money, and aggravation.

Knowing the true wind and sea conditions on the Great South Bay can be incredibly important in determining what kind of day you will have on the water. Did you know that there is a weather buoy on the bay that you can easily access from your phone? The buoy is located south of Sayville in the open waters of the GSB. You can see wind speed, wind gusts, wind direction, air temp, water temp, and more. It is a great tool!

Good news, the dredging at Venetian Shores appears to be over. All equipment is gone and the ramp is open. An hour before high tide we saw depths of 4.5-5 feet. For the Great South Bay I suppose this is considered somewhat “deep”.
