It’s that time of the year again, and we are receiving a lot of calls for assistance due to overheating engine alarms and bogged down speed due to the eelgrass. Did you know that most of the time the eelgrass can be cleared from your water intakes? When you get an overheat alarm, make sure no boats are behind you, come off the throttle and stop. Then put the boat in reverse and give it some throttle for 5 seconds or so. This will often times clear the grass off of the lower unit of an outboard or I/O boat. If this does not work, give the engine(s) a rev in neutral. If you are still getting the overheat alarm, shut the engine(s) off and trim up the engine(s) or lower unit(s) all the way and see if the eelgrass is covering the water intakes, and pull the grass off. These simple steps could save you a lot of time, money, and aggravation.
