We packed a serious off-grid electrical system into this Northern Lite truck camper!
This build gets 1,200 watts of rooftop solar, 600Ah of lithium battery capacity, a 12V DC air conditioner, DC-to-DC alternator charging, and a complete Victron power system. The goal was to make this truck camper far more capable off-grid without sacrificing valuable storage space.
One of the coolest parts of the finished build: even with high clouds overhead, the solar array was producing enough power to run the DC air conditioner entirely from solar.
In this video we take you through the build, including:
• 1,200W rooftop solar array
• 600Ah lithium battery bank
• 12V DC air conditioner
• Victron inverter/charger
• Victron SmartSolar MPPT
• Cerbo GX monitoring and display
• Victron Orion DC-to-DC charging
• Lynx power distribution
• Battery monitoring
• Temperature-controlled equipment bay ventilation
• Modular Anderson connection between the truck and camper
• And plenty of real-world installation problem solving
We also show some of the challenges of fitting this much equipment into a truck camper and how we designed the system to remain serviceable and adaptable if the owner changes trucks or campers later.
If you're interested in solar, lithium batteries, DC air conditioning, or a complete off-grid electrical system for your RV, truck camper, van, or motorhome, this build should give you some ideas.
