As the Chair of the Great Sacandaga Lake Advisory Council, this project may be the most rewarding initiative that we’ve underwritten through the Lake Enhancement Fund.

A few years ago, BP High School teacher, Brian Henry, presented this fishery reef project to the GSLAC. Needless to say, it received unanimous support from our members.

As a life-long resident of the GSL, I’ve watched the fishery evolve. Years of walleye and trout stocking efforts have certainly made an impact; the bait-fish populations around our docks are impressive, but while our Northern Pike have gotten bigger, the lack of underwater structure has limited the development of these bait-fish. The little guys, with nowhere to hide, have fattened up the Pike, while other species struggle to grow.

For a couple years, I included “fishery structure” on our meeting agendas under new business, but I had no volunteers that were willing to undertake the necessary regulatory approval process. Fortunately, Brian and his students took the reins, and within only a few months, he contacted us to say he had received his approvals.
