Dear Members of District 6 Sail and Power Squadron:
We are saddened to report that our esteemed member P/R/C Richard E. Ashley, SN passed away on February 13, 2025, at age 86. Dick was a Past Rear Commander of the United States Power Squadrons, a Past Commander of Syracuse Sail and Power Squadron (1973), and a Past Commander of District 6. He was an Emeritus Member of USPS with 50 merit marks and was a full certificate holder with the grade of Senior Navigator. Dick was the editor of the Deep 6 (District 6 newsletter) for many years. Boating and boating education were his passions. His career was as an electrical engineer with General Electric and Lockheed Martin.
Dick was predeceased by his wife Ann, who passed away in Florida on January 15, 2022, at age 83. After serving as president of the Syracuse Power Squadron Squadronettes (women’s auxiliary), Ann went on to serve as Commander of the Syracuse Sail and Power Squadron in 1999. Ann was a registered nurse who enjoyed stitching, knitting, and sewing. Richard and Ann are survived by their three sons: Richard E. Ashley of East Palatka, FL; Karl E. Ashley of Baldwinsville, NY; and David C. Ashley (Kathy) of Brewerton, NY, four grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. David is a member and Past Commander of Syracuse Sail and Power Squadron who teaches our Engine Maintenance course.
Calling hours to celebrate Richard and Ann’s lives will be held at Fairchild and Meech DeWitt Chapel, 3690 Erie Blvd. E, DeWitt, NY 13214, on Saturday, February 22, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
A private burial at Woodlawn Cemetery will be held on Monday, February 24, 2025.
