How to Dock a Boat Without the Drama (3 Tips for Wind & Current)

Tip 1: Short Bursts, No Panic
The Mistake: Pinning the throttle down out of panic.
The Skill: Use short, controlled bursts of power in forward and reverse. Give the boat a click of throttle, then return to neutral. Let momentum do the heavy lifting while keeping the boat slow.

Tip 2: Angle Into the Elements
The Mistake: Trying to fight a strong crosswind side-on.
The Skill: Approach the dock at a sharp 30 to 45-degree angle directly into the wind or current. This maintains steering control. Use the wind to naturally drift your stern gently into place once your bow line is secure.

Tip 3: Secure the Spring Line First
The Mistake: Rushing to tie off the bow or stern lines first, causing the boat to swing wildly.
The Skill: Prioritize the spring line (the line from the middle of the boat to the dock). Securing this line first prevents the boat from moving forward or backward, pinning you safely against the dock.
