Remote Starter season is finally here, and as has been the custom the last couple of years we are going to be making several posts over the coming weeks to help you in making an informed purchasing decision!
Today we are going to do a quick review of the types of control you can have over your remote start system:
Factory Remote/RSR: Usually the most cost effective way of adding remote start to your vehicle, this uses your factory remote to control the system
Pros: Low Cost, No Extra Remotes
Cons: Range Limited to OEM Remote Range, Not compatible with all vehicles.
1-Way Remotes: These are add-on remotes that allow you to control the remote start at a further distance, or if your vehicle's OEM remote is not compatible to control the system. 1-way describes the RF communication, as in it sends a signal in 1 direction, from the remote to the car.
Pros: Longer Range, Universally Compatible
Cons: Slightly higher cost than RSR, extra fobs on your key ring.
2-Way Remotes: Add-on remotes that operate at significantly longer ranges than the 1-way or OEM remotes. RF communication is bidirectional, as the key fob sends a signal to the vehicle, and the vehicle sends confirmation signals back to the remote.
Pros: Significantly longer range, over 1 mile. Confirmation signal from vehicle to remote confirms operation even if you cannot see the car.
Cons: Higher cost than 1-way or RSR Systems
Smart Phone Control: Unlimited control range, as long as user and vehicle both have cellular reception. Can control the vehicle from your smart phone and attached smart watch, with infinite users by sharing your login. Real time feedback on vehicle status.
Pros: Unlimited Range, Unlimited Users, No Extra Key Fobs
Cons: Subscription Required, Higher hardware cost than other options.
