Question 10, the final one in the Mass Auto Body Association series: will the shop review the completed repairs with you before you take your vehicle home?

The answer should be an easy yes. A great shop is excited to walk you through everything they did, ready for any question, fully transparent about every system they reset, recalibrated, and repaired. These jobs are often more involved than they look on the surface, and a shop that lays it all out for you, nothing hidden, is a shop that's confident in its work.

That wraps up our 10-part series on the questions to ask before you commit to a repair shop. Hope this helped. Drop your questions in the comments, we'll do our best to answer them all.

Question 9 of 10 from the Mass Auto Body Association series: what happens if additional damage is found once repairs are underway?

A couple things to know. First, a shop that does a full blueprint and dismantle before starting should catch most of this upfront, so surprises are minimized. Second, in New Jersey, if it's an insurance claim, state law puts the responsibility for that additional damage on the insurer. A knowledgeable shop should be able to walk you through that process and advocate for you every step of the way.

Choose a shop that does a complete teardown and evaluation from the start, and this becomes a non-issue. Still a great question to ask.

Question 8 of 10 from the Mass Auto Body Association series: does the shop offer a written warranty on repairs, and what's actually covered?

A quality shop should show you this before any work begins. We provide two separate warranties, one from our coatings manufacturer and one from us, both spelling out exactly what's covered and how. That paperwork matters. If something comes up down the line, you want to know you can get it fixed without a fight.

Ask to see it upfront, even before you commit to a shop. It's one of the clearest signs you're dealing with a place that stands behind its work.

Q7: Do you have the proper equipment to repair today's advanced materials — aluminum, high-strength steel, EVs? 🔧

This is a tough one for the average customer to verify. Most shops will say "yes, no problem" — but do they actually have what's required?

Our advice: fall back on OEM certification here. A shop certified for a specific manufacturer or vehicle (like an EV, or a specialty car such as the Corvette C8) will have the proper equipment to match. It's the safest way to get a real answer, not just a reassurance.

Q6: Will you provide a detailed written repair plan and explain it to me? 🔧

Transparency is everything in this business. A shop that takes the time to build a full repair plan — backed by documentation, researched thoroughly, and accurate — gives you real confidence that the work will be done right.

Don't just take the plan at face value. Ask them to walk you through it line by line so you actually understand what's being done and why. That's the best way to know you're in good hands.

Q5: Do you perform required calibrations for safety systems like ADAS — cameras, sensors, braking systems? 🔧

This one's tricky. Anybody can say "yes," but do they actually understand what's involved? Calibration requirements vary vehicle to vehicle, and they change often — there's no simple rattled-off answer that applies across the board.

Our advice: ask this question to more than one shop and compare the responses. Listen for specifics, not just a quick "yes." If you have questions about your vehicle's requirements, reach out to us at 821 Collision — we're happy to share our best guidance.

Q4: Will you use OEM, aftermarket, or recycled parts — and why? 🔧

The "why" is the part that matters most. At our shop, we only use OEM parts (parts manufactured by your vehicle's maker) — and manufacturer documentation consistently backs this up, often warning against imitation or salvage parts.

Here's our why: OEM parts were engineered specifically for your vehicle. The manufacturer's engineers know exactly how that part performs in a crash, how it responds structurally, and how it holds up to corrosion. You bought your car for a reason — maybe that five-star crash rating. Following manufacturer procedures and using OEM parts means your car performs the way it was designed to, even after a repair.

Ask your shop this question, and ask for their why. Drop your answer in the comments.

Q3: Do they have OEM certifications or I-CAR Gold Class status? 🔧

Great starting point when vetting a body shop — but don't stop there. OEM certification means the manufacturer has verified proper equipment, training, and facility standards for repairing your specific vehicle. I-CAR Gold Class is the industry training standard many of those OEM programs are built on.

Here's the honest part: as association president, I've seen cases where that training isn't always being delivered the way it should be, or where the system gets gamed. So use these credentials as a starting point, not the whole picture — pair them with the rest of our question series to get the full picture on a shop.
