To you, Lexus Advanced Park is one button. Behind it are 12 ultrasonic sensors, 4 cameras, and about two dozen control units, sensors, and antennas, along with the brake and power steering systems, all working together. After a collision, every one of those components has to be properly refinished, calibrated, initialized, and tested before the system can be trusted again. That’s the part of the repair you don’t see.

What’s a reflection power test? On Toyota and Lexus vehicles with 77 GHz radar, any time you refinish or replace a bumper cover, you have to verify the radar can still see through the new cover and coatings. You take a baseline reading with the bumper off, install the cover, and rerun the test with the same setup. This one went from 12.9 to 12.3, well within the allowable tolerance of 5. Other OEMs, like Honda and Acura, require it too, so check the repair procedures.

I-CAR just announced Honda’s non-repairable zone templates for bumper covers. The idea is right, but the process isn’t. You print them from service info, cut them out, glue them together, then hold the whole thing up to the vehicle. On an Acura ADX rear bumper, that’s 10–15 minutes before you’ve even started. If OEM procedures are going to get followed in the shop, they have to be simpler than this.

Not a fan of the Lexus E-Latch? There’s more to it than a button. It’s tied to the blind spot monitor, so if a car or cyclist is coming up behind you while you’re parked roadside, it’ll stop you from opening your door into them.

Toyota's performance division is becoming its own brand.

GR (Gazoo Racing) is Toyota's answer to BMW M and Mercedes-AMG. Now it's being spun off into a standalone brand, so it won't be branded "Toyota GR" anymore, just GR.

GR already has several models, with more planned. The flagship is the GR GT, a serious piece of racing muscle that comes in both a track version and a street version.

The twist: the GR GT reportedly won't be sold at Toyota dealerships. In the U.S., it's expected to go through Lexus dealers instead.
