Parts of Ship: The Bulbous Bow

That rounded "nose" under a ship's bow isn't there to slice through the water. It's there to fight the ship's own wave.

Every hull pushes up a bow wave, and making that wave burns fuel. The bulb creates a second wave of its own. Get the shape right, and the bulb's trough lands right under the bow wave's crest. The two cancel out, the water goes flatter, and the engine does less work.

The catch: a bulb is tuned for a narrow range of speed and draft. When fuel prices pushed the global fleet into slow steaming, many bulbs ended up adding drag instead of cutting it. Some owners went as far as cutting the old bulbs off and welding on new ones shaped for slower speeds.

A good bulb can save several per cent of fuel. The wrong one quietly costs it.

Yup!

Retirement was supposed to mean slowing down.

Apparently, our version means waking up, figuring out which body part is complaining today, making coffee… and checking to make sure the boat is still where we left it. 😂

And somehow, we wouldn’t trade it.

A quiet anchorage, coffee in hand, nowhere we have to be — that sounds like a pretty good retirement plan to us.
