The rain on Friday soaked the kart track beyond repair for Sunday. We tried to get equipment on it, but it just sank into the mud. Fog and moisture in the air didn't help the drying efforts. But the guys gave it a great effort. Next Kart race is Sunday, October 19th from noon to 4pm.

UPDATE

Due to rainy weather this past week, Karts has been cancelled for this Sunday, September 21st, 2025!

Unfortunately we will have to cancel the April 20th Kart Races/Practice. Still lots of work to do for us to get to Opening Night on the Big Track. Working on multiple projects. One is to direct some overhead lighting directed at the Kart Track. This will allow us to go later under the lights from time to time. Also, we are going to be following the same rules as the Tulare Kart program. I would like to schedule a meeting with Kart teams to discuss some new procedures and also discuss which kart divisions we will be racing. Next Kart event is on a SATURDAY. Saturday, May 10th late afternoon race so everyone can be home on Sunday for Mother's Day. Sorry for the late notice. We were trying to fit it all in, but the number of improvement projects has us a bit overwhelmed. But we will get it going and think the new features will really enhance the experience for fans and teams.

The Santa Maria Speedway is happy to announce that 2025 will bring the first full season of racing since 2019. The track has struggled to maintain full seasons of racing since COVID, but now has secured a bright future of dirt track racing for the next generation of racers and fans while preserving the historic legacy of this great facility.

The 2025 Season at Santa Maria Speedway consists of 17 race nights on the 1/3 mile clay oval, as well as 8 days of Kart action on the SMS Kart Track, and a season-ending Monster Truck Show. The 2025 season features some of our long-time favorite Sprint Car series like the USAC/CRA 410 Sprints and the NARC King of the West 410 Winged Sprints. Also returning is the new Ultimate Sprint Car Series. This series came about in 2024 with great car counts and even better action. And two of the USCS Sprint shows will be double-headers with the USAC Western States Midgets. The California RaceSaver Winged Sprints also come back after a long absence, and with 6 races in 2025. And two of our big sprint shows will also feature the popular winged California Lightning Sprints. This season also features the first ever appearance at SMS for the Kings of Thunder Winged 360 Sprints. These folks bring great car counts and fast winged sprint action. Can’t wait for that! Another first for SMS, the BCRA/WMR Super Series Midget Races come to Santa Maria just as summer breaks. Lot’s of new things for 2025!

2025 also brings back some popular stock car divisions featuring our local race heroes in their IMCA Modifieds, IMCA SportMods, Hobby Stocks, MiniStocks, and Dwarfcars. Speaking of Dwarfcars, the SoCal Dwarfcars will be teaming up with the WSDCA to bring the SoCal Dwarfcar Nationals back to Santa Maria for three nights of great Dwarfcar action, aided by our local MiniStocks. And the IMCA divisions also get some additional excitement as Santa Maria Speedway will host night #2 of the 4-night Central California IMCA Clash featuring IMCA Modifieds, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Stock Cars, and Hobby Stocks. ProStocks headline three nights of racing with the West Coast ProStocks starting the season, and the Tri-State ProStock Series wrapping up the dirt track season.

The Kart Sundays are back with seven weekends dedicated to what has become our “farm team” of young racers. Some of our current big oval drivers started on the SMS Kart Track. The seven kart events include a Labor Day Weekend two-day show that has been a great event with race teams and their families camping out, BBQing, and, oh yeah, two days of kart racing.

Monster Trucks round out the season on the Saturday after Halloween to become part of the Halloween Smash. This fun event for all ages features trick-or-treating, costume contest, pumpkin smashing, and Monster Trucks navigating our challenge course lined with crush cars and jumps to achieve the air we want to see!

Santa Maria Speedway looks forward to hosting fans and race teams from all over the state and beyond as we have done since 1964! To all of our racing family, please support this Benefit BBQ in Los Alamos on Sunday. A member of our team here at SMS lost his grandchildren in a horrible accident last week. For those who don't know James I can tell you he is one of the most dependable and good-hearted members of our Safety/Tow team. Our track family hearts ache with sadness. Please pray for him and his family to find strength and faith. And please support them with love by coming to Los Alamos to share comfort with the healing power of breaking bread with friends. And to honor the precious lives of Stella and Luna.

Update! Tomorrow night is unfortunately cancelled due to predicted weather. We were hoping for better forecast, but the overnight rain predicted will make the facility too muddy for teams and guests to safely navigate the property. It usually takes at least 8 hours of sun to dry out the facility after a storm of this size. The forecast for Saturday has very little sun and plenty of additional sprinkles that will prevent any drying efforts. We could wait til tomorrow to make the call, but that would be unfair to fans and teams who travel from some distance to watch and race. Again, so sorry. We were really looking forward to this lineup. The Pombo family intends to try to hold one more race to show the appreciation to the fans and teams who have supported Santa Maria Speedway this season as we try to restore dirt track racing on the Central Coast. Update! We are watching the forecast closely! We will make the call on Friday to give everyone time to adjust their weekend. However we are still hoping the storm timing allows for racing. We will stay on top of it. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and go racing! Saturday, November 23rd - 305 Winged Sprints, IMCA SportMods, Hobby Stocks, MiniStocks, and American Stocks. Tickets are $25 for General Admission with discounts for Seniors, Military, and Students. Kids 6-12 are always $10, and kids 5 and under are always FREE. Tickets available at the gate when they open at 4pm. Qualifying at 5p, with racing at 6p.

Karts are on for Sunday, Sept 29th! Gates open at 9am with Hot Laps at noon. Special thanks to Mark Silva for getting the Skip fixed so we could prep the track. Couldn't happen without his support. On Sunday we will be discussing adding an additional date to make up for some cancellations. Looking forward to seeing the kart teams on Sunday!

Almost ready for Sunday Kart Day. Ripped open the track to get the moisture deeper. Pack truck and water buffalo will be on hand to keep it from drying out in the sun. Hot laps at noon and then right into the heats. Run til we’re done. Come out with the family and have some fun watching these kids (and kid-like) take to the track. No concessions on site so outside food allowed.

Karts are on for Sunday, August 25th. Gates open at 9a with hot laps at noon. All divisions welcome. We are still getting this program started so running Tulare club rules for now to keep things simple. Beat the heat and come have some fun in the not so blazing sun. Pit Passes are $50 for drivers and $10 for non-drivers. We apologize for the schedule changes, but looking for things to settle down for rest of season. Next race on the big track is Sunday, Sept 1 with the USCS Sprints.

Cal Fire moved out over the weekend and Sam is out on the track prepping for the big race this Saturday. NARC King of the West Winged 410 Sprints return to Santa Maria Speedway for the first time since the reopening. Gates open at 4p, qualifying at 5p, racing at 6p. SantaMariaSpeedway.net

While it was a bummer to have to cancel today’s Kart event, it is nice to see the Speedway contributing to helping these brave firefighters. And if there was any doubt that they needed the additional space, I think these pics show that they are using every space to the most benefit to keeping our first responders fed, supplied, organized, and well rested. I have taken many calls from racers and fans asking if the crews need anything dropped off at the Speedway. After conversations with the site chief they suggest contacting the Red Cross and donating there. Best to avoid the Speedway property and Hutton Road to give these crews the best access possible. They are being well taken care of. Again, thank you to the Kart Teams for their support of our cancellation.

Attention Kart Teams!! Unfortunately we are going to have to cancel this Sunday’s Kart races. Cal Fire originally thought they would not need the inside of the track. But at today’s morning briefing it was clear that the number of fire crews from all over California were stretching out our parking lot and pits, so we opened up the infield to additional engines and support vehicles for the morning briefings. David and Tony really wanted to put on the Sunday show, but we feel it’s more important for firefighters to have all the room they need to get this mission done so they can all go back to their families. The Speedway is working closely with Cal Fire every day and all are cooperating to achieve this goal. Again, bless these first responders.
