Think your dog has it rough riding in the back seat?

In the 1930s, someone came up with THIS. 😳

It was a canvas sack that attached to the outside of the car, with a hole for your dog’s head.

And yes — it was actually promoted as a way for your dog to ride “comfortably” on the running board.

We’re pretty sure the dog was never consulted. 😂

Did you know Newton High wasn’t always the Cardinals? 👀

Back in 1928, Newton teams were known as the “Lil Washers.” After attending a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game with a group of students, NHS principal H.A. “Pop” Lynn suggested it was time for a new name.

Students and faculty voted — and the Newton Cardinals were born! 🐦❤️

Almost 100 years later, we’re still wearing that red & black with pride.

THIS was a flex. 😂

If you had a phone permanently installed in your car, complete with the giant handset and curly cord, you were kind of a big deal.

Ralph Teetor lost his eyesight when he was just 5 years old. Years later, while riding with his lawyer, he got frustrated because the driver kept speeding up and slowing down while he talked.

That frustration led Teetor to develop a speed-control device that eventually became what we know today as cruise control. 🚗

🚗 Now THIS is some Iowa automotive history!

Before Fred and August Duesenberg became famous for building some of the most legendary cars in America, they helped design the Mason automobile right here in Des Moines.

And yep… that story about driving one up the Iowa State Capitol steps? That really happened. 😳

Here’s the Newton connection 👇

In 1910, Frederick Maytag bought a majority interest in the company, creating the Mason-Maytag Motor Company. Maytag eventually left the automobile business to focus on something Newton knows pretty well… washing machines. 😂
