Where does heating oil come from?

Since this is Earth Science Week, we’d thought we’d tell you!

• Heating oil starts as microscopic marine plants, algae, and plankton that settled at the bottoms of ancient seas and lakes.
• Layers of sediment, sand, and mud buried these organisms deep underground.
• Over millions of years, the Earth’s geothermal heat and intense pressure transformed this organic material into crude oil, the basis for your home heating oil.
