We wrapped up the last job at the old Dead Man’s Idle location with a 2008 Mazda 3 equipped with the FNR5 transmission.

After diagnosis, we determined that the 1st and 2nd gear friction plates were in severely worn condition, making a transmission rebuild necessary. A complete master rebuild kit was recommended to properly address the wear and refresh the transmission.
The customer chose to remove the transmission himself and bring it to Dead Man’s Idle along with the master rebuild kit he had purchased. We handled the teardown, inspection, rebuild, and reassembly of the transmission, allowing the customer to take care of the reinstall himself.

Another transmission successfully rebuilt — and a fitting way to close out the old shop as we move into the new Dead Man’s Idle shop.

What started life as a stock TBI 350 pulled from a 1994 Suburban in a scrap yard is officially finished.
This one went from donor engine to a completely rebuilt mild-performance SBC, built with reliability and real-world drivability in mind.
The foundation is a GM 10243880 350 block with the factory crank and forged GM rods, paired with dished pistons and a fresh ring and bearing package. Up top, we're running 64cc GM truck heads with stock 1.94"/1.50" valves, Comp Cams 981 springs, and a Comp Cams XE262H-10 camshaft with 218°/224° duration and .462"/.469" lift.
The valvetrain, timing set, oiling system, cooling system, ignition, intake, fuel system, and exhaust have all been gone through and assembled as one complete package.
For induction, we're moving away from the original TBI setup and running a Summit aluminum dual-plane intake with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor.
Nothing extreme. No crazy race parts. Just a solid old-school small-block built to make good usable power, have a strong idle, and be dependable on the street.
From a scrap-yard donor to a finished engine — this 350 is ready to run.

Not every engine gets a second chance.

This small block Chevy 350 was pulled from a salvage yard with an unknown history and plenty of miles behind it. Most people would see a worn-out core headed for the scrap pile. We see potential.

Over the next week, Dead Man's Idle will be tearing this engine down to the last bolt, inspecting every component, performing the necessary machine work, and rebuilding it from the ground up. No shortcuts. No guesswork. Just quality workmanship and attention to detail.

Today's photo is the starting point. The next time you see this engine, it'll be a completely different story.

Follow along and see what a proper rebuild can do.

This 2004 Road King came into Dead Man’s Idle with a pre-diagnosed charging system issue after electrical problems left the bike less than dependable. The owner was looking for a professional, cost-effective repair, and that's exactly what we set out to provide.

We replaced the factory components with an upgraded stator and voltage regulator, then verified proper charging system operation before sending it back down the road.

No unnecessary parts, no dealership prices—just quality repairs and dependable results.

Whether it's two wheels or four, we're committed to keeping our customers on the road with honest service and attention to detail.

Back in the shop with this 2001 Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad 1500.

The bike originally came in with clutch concerns, so we performed a complete clutch rebuild and got it back on the road.

Unfortunately, after additional riding, an internal transmission failure surfaced. Further inspection showed that the repairs required to rebuild the transmission would exceed the value of the motorcycle itself.

Rather than recommending an uneconomical repair, we advised the owner that replacing the motorcycle would be the more practical route. Sometimes the best repair decision isn't the most expensive one—it's the one that makes the most sense for the customer.

At Dead Man's Idle, honesty comes first. We'll always provide recommendations based on what's best for your machine and your wallet.

Customer brought in an engine with oil and coolant mixing together, suspecting a blown head gasket.

After teardown and inspection, the actual cause turned out to be a hairline crack in the block hidden within the oil valley. Applying heat exposed moisture pushing through the crack, and after lightly cleaning the surface, the damage became clearly visible.

Not every coolant and oil contamination issue is a failed head gasket. Proper diagnosis matters, and identifying the true cause before replacing parts saves time, money, and unnecessary repairs.

Customer brought in a 4HP 13-gallon Campbell Hausfeld compressor that was popping breakers and throwing sparks while running.

Pulled the front cover off the motor and found the issue immediately — a small steel ruler had fallen inside and got caught in the cooling fan. As it spun, the ruler was making contact with the electric motor, causing the sparks.

Removed the obstruction, checked everything over, and now it’s back to running like it should.

Sometimes it’s not a major failure — just something simple causing big problems.

Another one through the shop at Dead Man’s Idle.

This 2015 Subaru Crosstrek came in needing a cam phaser and timing chain replacement.

These engines don’t leave much room for error when it comes to timing, so attention to detail is everything. Now it’s back together and running the way it should.

If your vehicle’s making noise on startup, throwing timing codes, or just not running right—don’t ignore it. Catching it early can save you a lot down the road.

Message the page to get on the schedule.
