When you start your engine in the morning, the temperature is a key piece of information that the computer needs to know how to react. That's why the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor exists, which measures coolant temperature. This fluid circulates through the engine and radiator to dissipate heat, and when the engine is cold, the ECT sends a voltage signal to the ECU indicating low temperature. The computer responds by injecting more fuel, generating the typical acceleration during a cold start, which then decreases as it stabilizes. But when the coolant reaches its operating temperature, the ECT sends another signal, adjusting the mixture and improving engine efficiency. If you use water, poor-quality coolant, or there is corrosion, leaks, or air in the system, the cooling circuit can be damaged, affecting the thermostat, radiator cap, and also the ECT sensor, causing mixture misfires, overheating, or erroneous temperature readings.
