Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1, NY The IUBAC Local 1, NY is dedicated to the crafts of bricklaying, stonesetting, masonry restoration and plastering.

A city is defined to a large degree by the character and quality of its people and its built environment. Union masonry in New York City provides a perfect convergence of these two elements, shaping the cityscape and providing manpower and resources of the highest caliber to get the job done, and get it done right – on time and within budget. With unparalleled training, skill and pride in their work, members of the IUBAC Local 1, NY have built and restored some of the most iconic buildings in New York City and Long Island including the Empire State Building, St. Patrick's Catherdral, the Chrysler Building, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Grand Central Terminal, Yankee Stadium, Citi Field and the World Trade Center Memorial. We continue to build as our predecessors did – laying block and brick, setting stone, plastering, pointing, caulking and cleaning – with individual units of material, piece by piece to create a tight, masterful and lasting structure.

Complex architectural restorations require a high level of technical skill, safety discipline, and collaborative problem-solving on site.

At the Orchard Beach Pavilion project, BAC Local 1 NY members are demonstrating the standard of union craftsmanship required for challenging installations—from intricate soffit masonry and curved brickwork to high-tolerance tile setting.

Projects like this highlight the lasting value of a highly trained union workforce in preserving and modernizing vital public infrastructure across New York.

🚨 ATTENTION ALL BAC LOCAL 1 MEMBERS! 🚨
Check Your NYC DOB Certifications & Worker Cards

Make sure your NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) certifications and SST/Worker Wallet cards are up to date! These credentials are just as important as the tools you use on the job — and they’re required for all projects within the five boroughs.

We’ve seen too many members removed from sites due to expired certifications, causing setbacks for both you and the contractors. Don’t let that happen — take a minute right now to check your cards and confirm everything is current.

Your attention to this keeps our projects running safely and on schedule.
✅ Stay certified. Stay ready. Stay Union Strong.

Architects and union craftworkers learn more when they build together.

Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1 NY recently welcomed architects from the MTA and CTX Architects to its Long Island City training center for a hands-on Masonry Day.

Working in small groups with bricklayer, stone setter, and masonry restoration instructors, the architects spent four hours applying materials, asking questions, and seeing how design details take shape on a job site. That direct exchange helps designers and craftworkers solve challenges together before construction begins.

The day also offered a look at the training behind Local 1’s work and the opportunities its apprentices are building for their futures. Thank you to the MTA and CTX Architects for taking part, and to Local 1 President Jack Argila, Training Director Al Melendez, the instructors, and apprentices who made the experience possible.

Have a new construction or masonry restoration project coming up?
Contact BAC Local 1 NY to discuss your masonry needs and connect with skilled union craftworkers. We also invite you to share Local 1 NY’s information with project owners, architects, and colleagues so more teams can see what trained union masonry professionals bring to the job. https://hubs.ly/Q04yCvXk0
