Bugatti didn’t build the Grand Sport Vitesse to win a race. They built it to prove that 1,200 horsepower in an open-top car was a solvable engineering problem. The W16 engine runs four turbochargers, ten radiators and a cooling system so complex it required its own dedicated engineering team to keep it from destroying itself. Michelin had to develop a completely bespoke tyre just to keep the car on the road at its 408 km/h top speed. When it set the open-top production car world record in 2013, the driver wasn’t pushing. That was a controlled run with margin to spare.
