When the sargassum piled up at the marina thick enough to keep our 30′ Jeanneau from getting out, Captain Dustin Garland (50-Ton Master, USCG-licensed) didn't cancel the trip — he moved a family of five onto our party boat instead and turned it into a full 6-hour day on the water. Mom, dad, and their three kids started at Snipes Keys — the quiet backcountry sandbar most charters never even mention — then ran out to Jewfish Basin, where the wide, shallow flats gave the kids room to spread out, and the parents got some light-tackle fishing in on the edges. This year's sargassum bloom is heavier than anyone here remembers. The plan changed.
