As we head toward the Ducati 100 milestone, we’re looking back at the definitive moments that shaped our legacy—starting with our very first World Superbike Crown: Raymond Roche and the legendary 851 Factory.

By 1990, the 851 Factory had cemented itself as the ultimate benchmark for four-stroke motorcycles. Engineered around a cutting-edge, liquid-cooled, four-valve engine, it perfectly paired elite superbike technology with aggressive weight reduction tailored for the track.

The bike’s championship DNA was obvious as early as 1988, when Marco Lucchinelli rode it to an instant debut victory at Donington. Just two years later, the 851 reached the pinnacle of its powers. Driven by Raymond Roche, it captured 8 wins and 16 podiums, bringing home Ducati’s historic first-ever Superbike Riders' World Championship.
