That's not rock or coral. That's a corroded boat propeller. Ever wonder why this actually happens? It comes down to basic chemistry. 🌊

Saltwater acts as an electrolyte, and when two different metals are submerged together, like your prop, shaft, and hardware, a small electrical current forms between them. Anodes are made from a more reactive metal, so they take that current and corrode first, sacrificing themselves to protect the more crucial metals on your boat.

It happens faster than most people expect. Warmer water, stray electrical current from a marina dock, or even a nearby boat with an electrical issue can speed up the process significantly.

That's why we check anode condition on every dive. Catching it early is a quick fix. Catching it late looks like this.

Electrolysis doesn't happen overnight. It's a slow process, and worn-out zincs are what let it reach your prop and running gear like this.
