A letter to the businesses and residents of New Providence and Chatham Township,

I serve as Vice President and Treasurer of the NP Downtown Improvement District, am on the Board of the NP Professional Business Association, and am the owner of New Providence Fuel for over 25 years.

Regarding the Passaic Street bridge project, as of today’s date 9/22/2025, the major repairs for bridge construction are 100% complete. PSE&G has also completed their electric work on the bridge. There is currently no active work being done on the bridge day to day. The remaining effort is the NJ American Water company to complete their under-bridge connections, which according to the most recent DID meeting, they are not ready to begin and could be months away from starting.

Our businesses that heavily depend on traffic through town have been struggling for almost a year now. With our 4th quarter and holiday season in front of us, plus our upcoming town events such as the Downtown Fall Festival and Holiday Walks, we need to open up travel for ourselves and the surrounding towns over this critical bridge crossing.

We request all interested parties to contact your representatives to have the bridge re-opened for daily travel until the final utility work is ready to begin. Please call or contact your representatives so we can get back to our normal lives uninterrupted by detour traffic patterns affecting our schools, businesses, and residents who work outside of town.

With elections around the corner, now is the time to be pro-active and help us all get back to our normal lives that have been interrupted for almost a year.
