Big Nasty Hillclimb

This time of year we notice a number of people lighting up our three different Big Nasty pages, wondering what the story is with the legendary Big Nasty Hillclimb, an event that ran from 2004 to 2022 and at it's peak in 2012, drew 13,200 spectators and sold nearly 1,000 camping passes.

We stopped running the Nasty because the hill was getting really torn up and spectator counts were dropping. A lot of events, including the Big Nasty, were greatly harmed by the Covid 19 nonsense in 2020 and 2021, and most, including the Nasty, never really recovered.

We have continued growing and refining Utah's only hillclimb, X-12, and it happens every year on the first weekend in May. It is the world's longest, tallest hillclimb and is part of the Rockwell Pro Hillclimb Series. www.x12events.com

As far as the Big Nasty, we own the name and we were this-close to bringing it back in 2027. We had the PERFECT location lined up on a 400 acre ranch near Council, Idaho. Then came a sad call last week that family issues had closed that door, so we are now back to the drawing board. There is no such thing as a perfect location. Our former site had a lot of plusses, and several major minuses. The goal now is finding a location that is even better, and therefore even NASTIER!

The Nasty WILL come back. It was too cool not to. When it does, it will be cooler than ever, since hillclimbing was always only part of the Big Nasty Weekend. Remember some of the wild stuff that we did? V-8 chainsaws, mechanical bulls, pro bull ride competitions, mud drags, Razor races, fireworks, pumpkin cannons and more. When we return (2028 fingers and toes crossed) we will bring something new that will be mind-blowing. That's what the Big Nasty always was, go big or go home.

And WHERE will it be? We have a couple more ranchers near Council that we are talking with and there are several possibilities near Horseshoe Bend. There is a spectacular property in Oregon that we are trying to buy. Accept no substitutions. There is only ONE Big Nasty.

Utah's ONLY hillclimb returns next weekend May 1-2. It is green out there and we still have 11, front row camping spots, with perfect views of the hill, available for $100 each, (regular camping spots farther back are $25). www.x12events.com

We turned on the water tonight at Ontario Speedway for next weekend's test & tune. Today it was cold and pouring rain but the grass is green and it is supposed to be 71F and sunny next weekend. We have another hot lead on a new location for the Big Nasty Hillclimb and hope to make an announcement soon. Meanwhile, we hope to see you at our 3-mile Big Nasty Obstacle Adventure this Saturday. It is baked into the Oregon National STOL airshow, starting at 10am so that STOL fans can do the Adventure and then hit the STOL event about 300 yards away. The weather is going to be GLORIOUS next weekend for the X-12 Hillclimb, at least on Friday and Saturday, but it ain't looking so good for Sunday. In the past, the only thing that we have run on Sunday are the 700 and Open Pro classes. So we are going to push them back to Saturday and scrap the Sunday racing, something that a number of pros have asked us to do over the years anyway, so they can get home sooner. If you are still thinking about entering in the pro classes, they are now ALL on Saturday and we have extended the entry deadline to midnight on Tuesday, April 29. www.x12events.com. All hills are marked and ready to go next weekend. The 1,025 foot trophy hill that hasn't been made since three guys did it in 2018, has been scooted over to the left into some pretty much virgin ground, which means less whoops. Maybe someone will finally make it over that beast this year.

FINALLY, X12, the world's tallest hillclimb event, and the last hillclimb left in Utah, has a return road. A huge helmets off to Tyrel Nish for making this happen. He has been operating heavy equipment since he was a toddler, including building fire breaks on some nasty Western wildfires, so he is used to extreme terrain, but he admitted that there were a couple of times that he was puckering while building this thing. It is STEEP up there! While he was at the hill, he tricked out the pro hill start and staging area, built a new burnout spot, and smoothed out the campground. This guy is a rockstar.
