Ready to start a career at sea? Here’s how to get started.

Getting started in the maritime industry is relatively straight forward and doesn’t require prerequisite experience. However, it does require getting the right information and documents in hand. While each employer has different requirements, here’s a good place to start to get the credentials needed land your first entry-level role:

Entry-Level Requirements:

-Proof of U.S. Citizenship
-TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential)
-Obtain a USCG Medical Certificate
-Pass a DOT Drug Test
-Apply for an entry level USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)

Additional Recommended Training:

While not required for every job, these documents/courses open the door to more opportunities offshore:

-Passport
-STCW - Basic Training (BST)
-STCW - Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD)

The process of acquiring all these credentials and taking the training can take a few months and cost some money, so start early and be patient! Once your documents are in hand, you’re ready to start your new career. When you apply with an entry-level rating, look for positions like Deckhand, Ordinary Seafarer, Steward, or Wiper as these will help you get the experience to grow in your career.

Standing Tide Crew Management connects qualified mariners to find fulfilling work in the maritime industry as we partner with companies and vessel operators wanting to relate to motivated mariners. Our partners operate vessels across the commercial, defense/government, and expedition cruise sectors. Let us help you find your next role on the water!

It’s rarely just about the paycheck.

Most mariners aren’t looking for “another job”—they’re looking for the right fit.

That could mean a rotational schedule that allows more time at home. A vessel that aligns with their long-term career goals. A chance to gain experience with new equipment or operations. A company where they feel supported, respected, and part of a strong crew.

The best career moves aren’t always the ones with the biggest salary increase—they’re the ones that create opportunities for growth, stability, and a better quality of life both on and off the water.

That’s why, at Standing Tide Crew Management, we spend as much time understanding our mariners as we do our clients. The goal isn’t simply to make a placement, it’s to make the right one.

One of the things that makes the maritime industry unique is that there isn’t just one destination. Every endorsement earned, every hitch completed, and every new vessel sailed can open the door to the next opportunity.

Whether your goal is to work aboard expedition vessels, offshore support vessels, passenger ships, research vessels, or eventually sail as a Captain or Chief Engineer, every career starts with a first step—and grows through experience.

There isn’t one “right” path. Some mariners move quickly into leadership roles, while others build experience across different vessel types before finding where they thrive.

The important part is to keep learning, earning endorsements, and saying yes to opportunities that move your career forward.

At Standing Tide Crew Management, we’ve had the privilege of watching mariners progress from entry-level positions to licensed officers and senior leadership. That’s one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Wherever you are in your maritime career, remember today’s position doesn’t define your future; it builds it.

One open position onboard rarely stays just one open position.

It can mean longer watches, delayed crew reliefs, increased overtime, added pressure on the rest of the crew, and more time spent solving staffing challenges instead of focusing on operations.

That’s why the strongest vessel operators don’t wait until someone signs off to start looking for a replacement.

They build relationships with recruiting partners, maintain a pipeline of qualified mariners, and plan for upcoming rotations.

Because successful crew management isn’t about filling vacancies—it’s about preventing them from becoming operational challenges in the first place.

At Standing Tide Crew Management, we believe the best hire is often the one that’s already identified before the position becomes available.

Are you a mariner looking for your next hitch or a long-term maritime career?
It’s easy to think maritime hiring is just apply → get hired → ship out.

At Standing Tide, we know there is so much more to it. We aren’t just looking to put a body on a boat; we want to match your specific credentials and career goals with the right opportunity.

Here is what partnering with our team looks like after you apply:

Review: We evaluate your experience, licenses, and availability.
Connect: You interview directly with our maritime-experienced team.
Match: We align you with commercial, expedition, or government vessels that fit your goals.
Deploy: We handle the heavy lifting of onboarding, travel, and rotation logistics.

Most importantly, our support doesn’t end when you cross the gangway. We remain available to our crews 24/7. Because in this industry, good placement doesn’t just fill a billet; it supports the mariner.
Standing Tide works with multiple vessel owners and operators to crew their vessels and are consistently growing our network and opportunities. If you are a mariner looking for an exciting new career move or want to see what options are available, don’t wait, reach out now!
