Sad news. Walter was a class act who was dedicated to his job. Our prayers go out to his family and friends. A real pleasure to have worked along side with.
Macomb County Watch extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of retired Chesterfield Township Fire Department Captain Walter Wilhelm, who passed away at age 76 on Wednesday, December 10th.
Captain Wilhelm suffered a medical emergency while driving back from visiting his brother in Ohio. He was able to remain composed enough to control his vehicle and prevent harm to other motorists while suffering the medical emergency, showing how dedicated he was to protecting those around him from harm.
Walter joined the United States Air Force as a firefighter in 1968, before transitioning to civilian life in 1972, although he remained employed as a firefighter for the Selfridge Air National Guard Base. He then began to work part time at Selfridge Air National Guard Base and the Chesterfield Fire Department. After more than 30 years of service as a firefighter at Selfridge ANGB, he retired from the base and began working full time for the Chesterfield Fire Department. He grew to the rank of Captain before retiring for good in 2017.
Walter dedicated his life to protect others for nearly 50 years, risking his life for the communities around him.
When he wasn’t protecting his community or enjoying time off with his family, Walter served as a Trustee for his church, Good Shepherd Lutheran. He loved being involved in community service projects and devoted much of his time giving back to God.
Walter is survived by his wife, Debbie Wilhelm, his two daughters, Wendy and Rachel, his daughters spouses, his seven grandchildren, their spouses, his two great grandchildren, and his two siblings.
Thank you, Walter, for your service to the community and your selfless service will never be forgotten! Rest in peace!
