Today, we’d like to share another Buggy that recently came in for some work. This Meyers Manx Manxter is an impressive build, featuring both a Subaru engine and transmission. It’s a well-traveled buggy, having attended many Manx club events along the East Coast. Over the years, however, it developed a wobble in the front end, caused by a toed-out front alignment and a blown steering dampener.
During a test drive after replacing the steering dampener and performing an alignment, we noticed a slight pull from the right front wheel while braking. We planned to check this back at the shop—until, all of a sudden, as we approached a stop sign, the right front wheel locked up completely, leaving the car unable to move forward. Interestingly, the car drove perfectly fine in reverse, so we backed it onto the berm and called for the truck and trailer.
What could have caused the wheel to lock up only while driving forward? Once back at the shop and up on the lift, the culprit was clear: after years of driving, a caliper bolt had completely backed out and fell out during the test drive.
Let this serve as a friendly reminder: 1. Loctite is your friend—don’t be afraid to use it! 2. It’s always a good idea to periodically check the bolts and nuts on your buggy to make sure everything is properly tightened. Now is the perfect time to inspect your buggy and replace any worn-out parts so you can enjoy trouble-free driving all summer long!
