Race update from this Weekend with the KAYO USA Storm 300.
I decided to throw a leg over it and take it for an adult Quad Race. I wanted to personally see what it would do in a 1.5hr XC race. (Full disclosure- I only race a couple times a year and eat way more chili dogs than i should 🤣) I put it in the sport quad class with mostly 400ex's. To say I got a few looks was an understatement 😆
Bike fired instantly and was out front of the 400's. Ran out of real estate and caught the flag pole sending me into the woods dead last. From there I went out and had fun chasing my Daughter for a lap who was also in that class on her Raptor 250. We came through the on the first lap and she got tired of dad pushing her and moved over. From there I pushed on. The bike not once ever ran short on power but I did have to clutch the bike a little more than i would have liked to. I'll play with the gearing some more. The bump steer was pretty noticeable. The seat leaves ALOT to be desired.
We changed the rear tire combo up this week. We previously had mini masters but when I buy an 18" tire. I want an 18" tire 😒
The 18" ITP holeshots we put on the rear worked absolutely perfect. Never getting stuck once in the mud sections.
Full disclosure I probaly would have preferred the big tire package on the adult course but for a youth racer the 18/20 combo works excellent.
Factory front brake pads faded pretty quick. I'm a heavy front brake user, very little rear. That made me have to switch up how I normally ride and slowed me up a bit.
We did pit on lap 2 as there was no way it was going the entire race on a tank of fuel. (kayo- we need a bigger tank and plastic preferably, there's a ton of room in there for a larger capacity tank).
Last lap, I did climb a berm on a hill climb and got hung up 3/4 of the way up for about 5 min until I got help to lift the bike off some trees i was stuck on. Sat there and watched several machines go by as there was nothing I could do by myself.
I did have a few issues with my feet coming off the factory foot pegs a couple times. The fix for that is already in progress.
The BNR Motorsports shock package worked excellent. We set them up for my son and he likes a little stiffer setup than i personally do but I managed just fine.
We also fitted it with an OEM kawasaki spark plug cap as we had issues with factory cap not liking to get wet.
Finished with a 4th/8th in class. Overall I'm super happy with how the machine performed. Clutch never slipped even tho I abused it. I heard the fan run 1 time. The cooling system works very well. The 520 chain drive conversion with an aluminum rear sprocket has been holding up excellent. Our dual sprocket guard setup from TJM Coatings has been key to that. My biggest complaint would be the seat. Its rough. Very narrow and solid.
Our A-R air box lid did its job but im not 100 percent happy with it so im gonna go back and do some changes there.
We are getting alot of messages for parts on these. The only thing that is currently available for purchase is the Ac Racing front bumpers. I want to get a couple more races on some other components before we offer them up.
I'll end with this....This is an excellent YOUTH machine for the price. Just like any machine, if your gonna race it. There would be things I recommend being done first. No different than when you buy a new 11.5k YFZ450r and have to change half the machine up to go race xc.
