Oh what fun it to be a Ford tech. Sometimes I wonder what were the engineers smokin when the designed the timing systems. 5.4l bits the dusts #..... I will say this tho the 5.4l is a cake walk compared engine timing on a 4.0 like the explorer which has 4 chains if its a 4x4.

One 5.4l 3v down and one more to go, the down side is this one was taken from a expedition and put into a f150 with out the installation of new parts. In my opinion a very poor install. Will be doing a overhaul on this engine since the cylinder heads and cams are scored, vehicle has no oil pressure when warm, and once again chain tensioner gaskets blew out. Hope that the block is reusable out if so, i will be installing used low mileage cyl. Heads and cams, new followers and valves, definitely will be upgrades the oil pump to a high volume most likely melling. All new timing components and will be using the metal ratcheting style tensioners (only way to go). Bringing some life back into this engine.. might even swap in a few performance ad on while I'm there.

5.4l 3v Blown gasket on right side tensioner which leads to low oil pressure causing the chain guide to brake and jump timing also a cam phaser no longer working properly. Luckily the cam and cam journals were still in good shape and not scored from low oil pressure. After installing new tensioners, timing chains cam phasers and vvt she runs smooth and still has power.

some advice for when your changing your oil. Before remove the oil filler cap look to see if there and dirt and grime build up around the cap and if so take a rag and wipe it off before removing the cap that way it doesn’t end up in side the motor because it could eventually cause serious internal engine problems later down the road. And check the threads on the cap as well.

Don’t mind doing some late time repairs sometimes. Removed and replaced leaking valve cover gasket that just finally gave up. Over time the gasket become hard due to the heat from the engine it does happen. Got it fixed for her with no more leaks.
