The penny test. Insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln's head upside down and facing you. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is too low and it is time for new tires.

Also watch for sidewall cracks, bulges, and uneven wear, and check pressure when the tires are cold.

Here is a habit worth building: treat your vehicle like it always needs to be ready to go.

Not just for the daily routine, but for the unexpected, whether that is a last-minute trip, a family emergency, or needing to leave the area in a hurry during peak season.

A road-ready vehicle comes down to a few basics that are easy to stay on top of. A battery that is not on its last legs. At least half a tank of fuel. Tires with good tread and correct pressure. Working lights. And no warning lights you have been ignoring.
