Huge shout-out to Aircraft Magneto Service in Montana! I gave them 2 crusty old magnetos and they sent me back these beautiful new looking magnetos! Totally tore them down and cleaned them up and rebuilt them! The Tern is going to purr like a kitten! Every magneto I have sent to them has been flawless! Definitely recommend that if you need your magnetos inspected send them there!

So working on a 120 at the hangar and during annual I noticed that the doublers weren't installed as per the air worthiness directive issued back in 1947. After cleaning the area, I determined that I could see some cracks emanating out away from the hinge block and after taking them apart, this is what I found! #1 The hinges have needle bearings in them that were all gunked up with dirt and corrosion and of course they did not move. So this causes a twisting moment in the area of the hinge which causes the metal to flex and work harden over time. What happens is is a crack will form and continue to be generated as it continues to get work hardened and twisted. So because without the doublers not being installed, these cracks were able to grow much larger than normal. So what is happening now is we will have to totally disassemble the elevator. Clean it and install New spars with the doublers. But in doing so it has turned into basically a full elevator rebuilt/ repair. The skins have some damage on them. Everything's 80 years old. So we're cleaning them really good and going to put new skins. New spa new doublers and it will be all primed and painted with new rivets. So essentially the elevators will be overhauled and ready for service for another 80 years!
