Nothing beats a quiet weekend tent camping right along the shore of Lake Michigan. With golden hour stretching across the water, autumn foliage lighting up the woods, and Ford Bronco ready for any adventure, it's hard to imagine a better way to unwind.

Pitch the tent, grab a warm drink and let the world melt away.

For most of us, when we think about the Ford Motor Company, cars and trucks come to mind. However, over the years Ford has built many different things from tractors and farm equipment to charcoal and of course cars and trucks.

Our old friends Henry and Edsel also had an interest in aviation and Hank built an airport. Ford Airport in Dearborn, Michigan, was one of the first modern airports in the world and operated from 1924 to 1947. The site is now part of Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Proving Ground. The airport was about 360 acres.

This airport saw many world and U.S. firsts. It was the first U.S. airport with a hotel across the street. It had the first concrete runways, the first U.S. scheduled passenger service, the first contracted airmail service, the first radio communication control for a commercial flights, and the first U.S. passenger terminal.

The buildings were designed by architect Albert Kahn and are considered to have greatly influenced the design of early airports throughout the U.S.

In 1925, Henry Ford built a large, modern, permanent dirigible mooring mast. It was only used twice and demolished in 1946.

The last two photos here are just a couple examples of airplanes built by Ford. First is Fordโ€™s Trimotor โ€˜Tin Gooseโ€™ from 1925. The last photo is the 6,000th Ford B-24 bomber built at Ford's Willow Run facility during WWII. Both planes are worthy of their own stories which I'll share another time.

I know it's still summer, but I came across this photo and wanted to share it. It appears that Warba was a General Motors town...

The Warba Minnesota Winter Parade on Main Street.
Leading the parade we have a 1949 Buick, followed by a 1953? Chevy, then we have a car I couldn't identify and bringing up the rear with a huge PA speaker mounted to the roof is a 1950 Pontiac.

What other cars can you identify?

โœจ Nothing says 1950s cool quite like the '56 Chevy Bel Air Convertible! โœจ

As part of the legendary "Tri-Five" generation, the 1956 model took everything people loved about the '55 and dialed the style up to eleven.

What made the '56 "The Hot One"? Here is a look at what was new and why this drop-top icon still steals the show:
โœณ๏ธ The Face-Lift: Chevrolet swapped out the previous year's Ferrari-inspired grille for a sleek, full-width traditional grille that stretched from fender to fender.
โœณ๏ธ Speedline Styling: A brand-new two-tone body-side paint treatment framed by brilliant chrome trim gave the car a sweeping sense of motionโ€”even when parked.
โœณ๏ธ The Clever Disappearing Act: One of the coolest hidden tricks debuted this year: the fuel filler cap was ingeniously concealed behind the driver-side taillight housing (a trick borrowed from Cadillac)!
โœณ๏ธ Upgraded Power: Under the hood, the legendary 265 cubic-inch "Turbo-Fire" V8 got a bump in power, giving this cruiser plenty of muscle to match its looks.

Drop the power top, turn on the V8 rumble, and you're instantly transported back to the golden age of American cruising.

1966 was the last year for the "Flair Bird" (1964-1966).

The 1966 Ford Thunderbird Convertible is a stunning classic! It features sharp "jet-age" styling, a gorgeous wrap-around rear seat, and a famous power-operated top that hides under a sleek metal rear deck. Under the hood, the standard engine is a 390 cubic-inch V8, but buyers could also upgrade to a new, powerful 428 cubic-inch V8 option.

Styling Highlights
*Jet-Age Look: Sharp lines give it a fast, bold style.
*Rear End: Sequential turn signals built into its continuous, wall-to-wall tail light assembly.
*Interior: It feels like a jet cockpit with a center console and wrap-around seats.

What Was New for 1966
*New Grille: A bold, new egg-crate pattern stands out on the front end.
*Dual Engine Choices: The standard 390 ci V8 was joined by the new 7.0-liter (428 ci) V8 option.
*Town Landau: Ford added a new hardtop roof model, but the convertible remained a star.

What's your favorite generation of Thunderbird? Leave a comment ๐Ÿ‘‡
